Despite the financial instability, owing to COVID-19, several high-profile deals went through as Premier League clubs splashed the cash. Despite many European heavyweights like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool among others, suffering financially following the ill-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, several Premier League clubs have had money to spend this summer.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea have all spent heavily during this transfer window. On that note, here are the five most expensive deals in the Premier League this summer.
1. Jack Grealish
100 million pounds
Aston Villa to Manchester City

Manchester City made Jack Grealish the most expensive English signing of all time and the most expensive signing of the summer when they triggered his 100-million-pound release clause. Grealish and those closest to him had an agreement in place in the summer of 2020 involving that well-documented nine-figure release clause being etched into his new contract he signed shortly after Villa secured Premier League survival.
2. Romelu Lukaku
97.5 million pounds
Inter Milan to Chelsea
One of the most prolific strikers in European football, Lukaku has returned to the club he supported as a young boy and where he has unfinished business, having been on our books between 2011 and 2014. The Belgian has signed a five-year contract and will add attacking firepower to the squad of European champions. Romelu Lukaku’s 97.5-million-pound move from Inter Milan to Chelsea was one of the biggest deals of the summer. Chelsea, who replaced Frank Lampard with Thomas Tuchel last season tasted success by winning the Champions League trophy. Tuchel has done incredibly well during his time in-charge at the club and has a clear system.
3. Jadon Sancho
73 million pounds
Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United

Manchester United’s long and hard pursuit of Jadon Sancho finally came to a conclusion this summer when Borussia Dortmund agreed to accept the 73 million pounds they were offering. Sancho had come up through the youth academy of United’s neighbours and rivals Manchester City before deciding to join Borussia Dortmund in Germany at a young age.
Sancho looked likely to join United last summer but Dortmund wanted $150 million for him and the Red Devils just weren’t willing to pay that transfer fee. One year on, it is reported that Dortmund have dropped their price to close to $120 million for Sancho.
4. Ben White
50 million pounds
Brighton and hove albion to Arsenal

Arsenal have at long last completed their third signing of the summer transfer window after confirming the capture of Ben White from Brighton in a club-record deal for a defender. Arsenal spent nearly 50 million pounds to bring Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion to the Emirates Stadium this summer. The Gunners saw two bids for the 23-year-old being rejected before deciding to break the bank for him. Under Graham Potter at Brighton, Ben White made 39 appearances across all competitions.
5. Raphael Varane
41 million pounds
Real Madrid to Manchester United

Varane, 28, is one of the most decorated players in world football and has amassed over 19 trophies in his career so far, including four Champions Leagues, three Spanish titles and the 2018 World Cup.
He has represented France 79 times and was part of the recent French squad at the 2020 European Championship.
In a shocking move, Real Madrid decided to offload both their starting centre-backs this summer. While Sergio Ramos left on a free transfer to PSG, Manchester United swooped in to secure the services of Franch defender Raphael Varane for 41 million pounds!
